Getting Ready for a Trip: A Guide to Preparing Your Pooch
You’re packing for a trip and your dog is coming along. Wonderful — dogs make good travel partners when they’re prepared for the road. Before you grab the leash and go, work through this guide so the journey is as easy on your pup as it is on you.
Before you leave
See the vet
Schedule a checkup before a long trip: vaccinations current, health concerns discussed, and — if your dog gets carsick or anxious — a conversation about calming options while you’re there.
Pack your dog's bag
Food for the whole trip plus a margin, water, bowls, leash, waste bags, medications, and the bed or blanket that smells like home. A dog with familiar gear settles into strange places faster.
Check where you're staying
Confirm the hotel or rental actually allows dogs, and read the pet policy for fees, size limits, and rules before you’re standing at the front desk finding out the hard way.
On the road
Secure your dog with a crate or seatbelt harness — it’s safer for them and far less distracting for you. Stop every couple of hours for bathroom breaks, water, and a short walk. Keep the car comfortable and never leave your dog alone in it.
When you arrive
Let your dog explore new surroundings gradually and on-leash until you know the area is safe. Hold the home routine as steadily as you can: same feeding times, same walk schedule. Routine is a dog’s anchor in a new place.
Mind the nerves
Some dogs travel cool; some stress. Familiar toys and blankets help, praise and treats for calm behavior help more, and your vet can suggest calming aids for the truly worried. Reward the behavior you want and the road gets easier every trip.
