Ready, Set, Go: Preparing Your Pet for a Perfect Day Trip
Planning a day trip with your pet along for the ride? Great choice — most dogs would trade every toy they own for a day out with you. A little preparation is the difference between a happy adventure and an afternoon of stress, so run this checklist before you load up.
Start with your pet, not the destination
Every animal is different. A young retriever will hike all day; a senior pug needs shade, water, and a schedule. Be honest about your pet’s energy, anxiety level, and any special needs before picking the outing — the best day trip is the one designed for the animal you actually have.
Do a quick health check
If it’s been a while, a quick vet visit before a big outing is worth it: confirm vaccinations are current and flag any concerns. At minimum, make sure flea and tick prevention is active — East Tennessee trails are generous with both.
Pack the essentials
- Food and enough water for the day, plus a travel bowl
- Leash, waste bags, and a spare of each
- Any medications on the day’s schedule

Secure the ride

Build in regular breaks for water, bathroom stops, and leg-stretching. When you arrive, let your pet explore gradually and keep the leash on until you’re certain the area is safe. Treats and praise along the way teach your pet that travel days are good days.
